Residential CCTV
Camera systems that produce usable evidence, record only what they lawfully should, and remain serviceable for years rather than months.
Domestic CCTV commonly disappoints at the moment it is most needed. The image is too wide to identify anyone, low sun falls behind the one camera that mattered, the recorder has been overwriting for a fortnight, or nobody is able to retrieve the footage when the police request it.
We specify each camera against the task it is intended to perform — to monitor an area, to detect movement, to recognise a known individual, or to identify a stranger — and we verify the coverage before installation rather than after. Every design is accompanied by a camera-by-camera schedule recording the purpose of each position and the image quality it can realistically deliver.
What a typical installation includes
- A written statement of the purpose of each camera position
- Camera-by-camera field of view and image quality schedule
- Cameras selected for the available light, weather exposure and mounting conditions
- Recording, storage sizing and an agreed retention period
- A segregated network for the cameras, isolated from household devices
- Privacy masking so that neighbouring property and public footpaths are excluded
- Secure remote viewing and a documented procedure for exporting evidence

How we tailor it to you
Proportionality carries particular weight in a domestic setting, because the cameras are directed at your neighbours as well as at your own boundary. We will advise where a camera position should not be used, apply masking where appropriate, and provide the signage and documentation that a complaint would require you to produce.
We are equally direct about the limitations. Cameras are effective at producing evidence and moderately effective as a deterrent. Where the objective is to prevent access down the side of a property, we will usually recommend that the budget is better spent on the side of the property.
Domestic CCTV and data protection
Where cameras capture any area beyond your own boundary — a pavement, a road, a neighbour’s driveway — the household exemption ceases to apply and the installation falls within UK data protection law.
This is rarely mentioned at the point of sale. We provide the supporting documentation as standard, because the cost to us is modest and it is the difference between an installation that is defensible and one that is a liability.
